What Is Dyslexia and What Can You Do If You Have It
Dyslexia is a congenital disorder characterized by unexpected difficulty learning to decode and spell words in relation to oneââ¬â¢s verbal intelligence, motivation, and educational opportunities (Gray E. S, 2008). People have many misconceptions regarding dyslexia which includes visual impairment, low IQ, dyslexia is curable, and this learning disability affects males more often than females. Indicators of dyslexia change over time since it is a process of developmental. It is difficult to identify children with dyslexia; however it becomes more prominent as they progress in school. Experts agree that dyslexia is a learning disability that affects language processing and that it does not occur because of low intelligence, lack of motivation,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Providing students with intensive phonological interventions during the early stages of learning development can help students improve in reading, writing, and spelling. Teachers may use various methods to instr uct students during the interventions. Approaches such as structured system and multisensory are recommended based on the researchers in the field of dyslexia. Structured system involves taking steps such as alphabetic principles, reading, spelling, and writing. First, student will learn the phonemes, the vowels, and the syllables. Students need to learn the relationship between letters, sounds and words. Students will work on rhythm and rhymes such as alliteration to help them develop letter sound recognition. Then students will progress onto reading words when they are able to successfully match the phonemes to the letters. Multisensory involves using fingers, letter tiles to manipulate the letters and spell words. Using a combination of visualization and kinesthetic to help them memorize new vocabularies, which is similar to a Montessori setting. Montessori believed the ideal curriculum for children with dyslexia is multisensory, structured, cumulative, and sequential (Skotheim M .K, 2008).
